Title: Poor Stainless: A New Story about the Borrowers
Author: Mary Norton
Published: 1966 (UK) by J. M. Dent, illustrated by Diana Stanley.
In the world of the Borrowers (tiny people living “under the floor” of a human house), the narrator Homily tells a tale to her daughter Arrietty.
The story centers on a young Borrower boy named Stainless (from the Knife Machine family) who has a perfect complexion and is the favourite among the adults—but he’s rather mischievous and teases the other children.
One day, Stainless is sent out to borrow parsley. He vanishes, prompting a full search of the manor (the human house, Firbank Hall) by the Borrowers.
The search fails to locate him. Meanwhile Homily and others are back home making black armbands (a sign of mourning) assuming the worst. But Stainless pops up unexpectedly, teasing them all from a knothole in the ceiling.
It turns out Stainless had climbed into a housekeeper’s basket, got taken to the village shop, lived on sweets/candy for a week, and then returned in another basket. However his perfect complexion is ruined by his indulgence.
